Rena May Hegarty, a cherished member of the Arc of Monroe family for 67 years, passed away on March 25, 2026, in Fairport, NY. Born on February 22, 1941, Rena was known far and wide for her spirited personality—her sense of humor, her infectious laugh, and her feisty nature leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. She had a special fondness for beads and necklaces, and headbands, which she collected over the years, a simple joy that was always a part of her vibrant character.
Throughout her life, Rena was involved with Arc Work’s and later Arc Day Services, another lasting connection to the community she loved. She was regarded as the matriarch of her house, a beloved figure whose warmth, friendship, and laughter spread to countless friends and caregivers alike. Rena also had a special closeness with her dear sister, Fran, over the years.
Rena’s final moments were marked by the loving presence of caregivers and friends, ensuring she was surrounded by care and companionship. Her presence enriched the lives of many, and her absence will be profoundly felt by the Arc of Monroe family and friends who held her dear.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Hegarty; her brother, George Hegarty; and her parents, George and Sarah Hegarty. Rena is also survived by Arc of Monroe Guardianship program.
A graveside service to honor Rena’s life will be held on March 31, 2026, 2:00 PM tat Mount Hope Cemetery, located at 1133 Mt Hope Ave, Rochester, NY 14620. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the enduring spirit of a woman who meant so much to so many.
Rena May Hegarty’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit. She was a joy to know and will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all who had the privilege to know her.
