James Penna

James Penna, affectionately known as "Big Jim", passed away on September 3, 2026, in Rochester, New York. He was born on September 30, 1952, in Rochester, and remained connected to the community that shaped his life.

Big Jim was a skilled craftsman and carpenter who took pride in his work as the proprietor of Penna Home Remodeling. Through his hands and his trade, he built more than projects; he created lasting work that reflected care, dedication, and a strong sense of purpose. His commitment to craftsmanship was a meaningful part of who he was.

He also found great enjoyment in life’s simpler pleasures. He loved going fishing, especially to Braddocks Bay, a favorite spot that brought him peace and happiness. He enjoyed camping with the Northrup family, sharing time outdoors and making memories. James was also an Air Force veteran, and his service to his country will be remembered with gratitude and respect.

He is survived by his son, James Penna, who carries forward his father’s name and memory. He will be remembered by his many close freinds and all of his Charlotte friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Margaret Penna.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Chapels, 4545 Lake Ave, Rochester, NY 14612. A Prayer Service and Military Honors will follow at 6:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Chapels.

May the memory of James “Big Jim” Penna bring comfort to those who knew and loved him, and may he be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of the outdoors, and the quiet strength he brought to his family and friends.
